an artistic leader
Liam Kelly is the founder and artistic leader of the Young Actors Programme – a programme he created to give young actors a clearer progression towards focused, professional actor training.
Liam is an actor, director and accomplished drama educator whose practice spans performance, actor training and creative leadership. Trained at The BRIT School and Bird College, with an academic background in Psychology, his work brings together rigorous performance technique with a sophisticated understanding of human behaviour, motivation and character.
With extensive experience across both mainstream and specialist education, Liam progressed to Head of Drama, leading the artistic and educational development of young performers while writing, devising and directing productions. His experience within specialist education has further shaped a responsive and individualised approach to actor development—recognising different ways of processing, communicating and accessing creativity while maintaining high artistic expectations and technical rigour.
Liam’s practice is informed by a breadth of established acting methodologies, drawing particularly upon Stanislavski’s psychological and action-based approach, Meisner’s emphasis on truthful responsiveness, Uta Hagen’s exploration of circumstances and character, and Brecht’s understanding of theatrical form and the actor-audience relationship.
His approach to voice and the embodied actor is similarly influenced by the work of Kristin Linklater and Cicely Berry, exploring the relationship between breath, body, text, thought and authentic vocal expression. Rather than prescribing a single methodology, Liam draws intelligently across practices, enabling actors to develop a technique that is both rigorous and personally responsive.
His teaching encompasses acting technique, text and script analysis, characterisation, objectives and intentions, given circumstances, subtext, voice, physicality and ensemble practice. His Psychology background provides an additional dimension to this work, informing his exploration of motivation, relationships, behaviour and emotional complexity in the construction of character.
Working across stage and screen, Liam is particularly interested in the relationship between technique and authenticity: developing the adaptability demanded by different performance mediums without sacrificing specificity, spontaneity or truth. His approach combines disciplined craft with individual artistic development, cultivating emerging actors who are intelligent, instinctive and versatile performers with a sophisticated understanding of their craft and the contemporary industry.
